REACH transports patients to needed care aboard our EC135 helicopter. REACH Air Medical Services Because REACH Air Medical Services is a relatively new member of the Oceanside community, we’d like to make sure you know about us and about the services we provide. Our mission is, “Always do what is right for the patient”, and we respond to 911 calls when air transport is needed in the case of medical emergencies. When someone is involved in an accident or has been severely injured, we are available to transport them to the nearest medical facility offering the type of attention they require. REACH also responds to hospital requests when there is a patient who needs to be transferred to a hospital or clinic offering specialized medical treatment or simply a higher level of care. In addition to transporting critically ill and injured adult patients, REACH flight teams are qualified to provide top-level care to neonatal and pediatric patients. In 2013, to help assure Oceanside residents and visitors 24/7/365 assistance during medical emergencies, REACH opened a local air ambulance base in association with Oceanside Fire Department. REACH is proud to support the efforts of Oceanside Fire’s dedicated emergency responders, adding a readily-available state-of-the-art medically-equipped helicopter to the existing range of services. REACH has been flying for almost 30 years and has demonstrated superior commitment to patient care since day one. Our clinical staff consists of flight nurses and paramedics, all of whom came to REACH with extensive prior experience in their specialty areas. Additionally, we require our clinicians obtain national advanced critical care certification within one year of hire. As for pilots, REACH has some of the most experienced, skilled and dedicated professionals at the helm. REACH currently operates out of their long-term temporary base at the Oceanside airport, but will ultimately have a permanent location at the Fire Training Center on Jones Road. Our air transport flight service area extends north to Ventura, Lancaster and Barstow; east to Thermal, Joshua Tree and beyond; and south to areas such as Imperial and Campo. After his motorcycle accident, Brian Cortez (above) was transported by REACH. “If it hadn't been for REACH being there so fast, I probably wouldn't be here today.” — Brian Cortez, Survivor Brian Cortez, a seasoned motorcycle rider from Highland, California can attest to REACH’s lifesaving efforts. About a year ago, he ended up in an accident that left him with 10 broken ribs, a broken shoulder blade and collar bone, a punctured lung, two damaged lumbar vertebrae—and that almost left him with just one foot. Although he brought all his riding skills to bear, Brian says the accident was ultimately an unavoidable “perfect storm” of circumstances. When a Suburban made a sudden turn in front of him on a winding downhill road at Mount Palomar, he hit the vehicle’s rear passenger panel with what he calls “indescribable” impact. He maintained consciousness until REACH’s Oceanside crew arrived by helicopter, then blacked out. He must have known he was in safe hands, and when he awoke, he was in the capable hands of the staff at Palomar Medical Center. There, he underwent four surgeries over two weeks and recovered remarkably quickly. Today Brian says, “Honestly, to look at me you would probably never guess I was in that accident.” Brian doesn’t take the emergency assistance for granted. “I’m a fighter, but I was really far away from a hospital. Honestly, if REACH hadn’t been there, I might have died.” Most of you probably know someone—or at least of someone—who has been air lifted. It is worth noting that CDC-supported research shows a 25% reduction in deaths for severely injured patients who receive care at a Level I trauma center versus a non-trauma center. In keeping with this, REACH, as part of the AirMedCare Network, offers an affordable membership program that protects participants from out-of-pocket flight expenses when they are transported by REACH or a participating provider. By substantially reducing the expenses associated with a medical flight of this type, membership helps patients and their loved ones stay focused on healing.
