VCC to Host Breast Cancer Awareness Event VISTA, CA—Vista Community Clinic (VCC) will host a breast cancer education conference from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18 at the VCC: Vale Terrace Women’s Center, 1000 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista. Breast Cancer Awareness: What You Should Know – What You Can Do will feature education and information on the importance of early detection of breast cancer. The featured speaker at the event is Lorraine Hutchinson, breast cancer survivor and a Deputy Chief in the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Hutchinson was recently named 2014 Honorary Breast Cancer Survivor by Susan G. Komen San Diego. In her role, she is speaking at several community events to educate San Diego County residents about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Other speakers include Joanne Thomasen of Every Woman Counts – San Diego/Imperial and Susan Webster of Pacific Cancer Fitness. They will discuss the importance of regular checkups, self exams and mammograms in the early detection of breast cancer as well as cancer recovery and wellness for patients and survivors. There will also be information about breast cancer resources available in the community. A question and answer session will follow the presentations. The VCC breast cancer conference is part of worldwide efforts to raise awareness of the disease during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The VCC event is funded by grants from Avon Breast Health Outreach Program, Komen for the Cure San Diego and Vista Valley Country Club. To date, the VCC breast health program has provided education about the early detection of breast cancer to more than 54,000 women; provided clinical breast exams for 18, 501 women; and referred 13,028 women for mammograms.
