New location provides legal services in North County for low- and moderate-income clients SAN MARCOS, August 28, 2014 – California Western School of Law’s Access to Law Initiative (ALI) has opened a law clinic in San Marcos to provide free and low-cost legal services to North County residents who would otherwise lack access to legal assistance. The pilot program was launched on July 8 at the D&C LDA Help office and is operated by registered legal document assistants (LDAs) Elias DeHerrera and Camelia DeHerrera. ALI began operations in San Diego in June 2012 and now has offices in two locations downtown. "In the past two years we have grown and delivered affordable legal services within the city of San Diego and we are excited to have the cooperation of Elias and Camelia DeHerrera to bring these services to North County," says Bob Seibel, director of ALI. "It’s a great start to be able to offer our free initial consultations." ALI is part of a rapidly emerging concept in the provision of affordable legal services to clients who often do not have access to lawyers. ALI also provides critical training and professional development for lawyers who have chosen to practice in solo, small-firm, and nonprofit enterprises. ALI attorneys are committed to building their practices by providing affordable services to clients, and by partnering with registered LDAs, the overall cost of full-service representation can be dramatically reduced. Registered LDAs are authorized by law to prepare legal documents for consumers—and can do so at significantly lower rates—allowing ALI attorneys to focus on counseling, advising, and representing the client. The lawyers are offering free 30-minute initial consultations at the LDA office every Tuesday, between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Interested residents may call the D&C LDA Help office at 760-744-1912 for an appointment or simply come to the office at 960 W. San Marcos Blvd., Suite 200. ### Celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2014, California Western School of Law is the independent, ABA/AALS-accredited San Diego law school that prepares graduates for the practice of law through a carefully sequenced program of study combining traditional legal theory with hands-on learning in real and simulated client environments. For four years in a row, California Western has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in recognition of the school’s numerous community-focused projects including the California Innocence Project, Community Law Projects, Mediation Clinic, Bail Project, and more. Students, faculty, and staff yearly donate more than 20,000 pro bono and service hours to nonprofits, clinical programs, and law offices.
